The Eastern Band of St.Ssylvester's College representing the 2 nd battalian has secured the all island championship 2009 in the national cadet corps assessment camp held at Rantambe.

ATHLETICS: 3rd Place for St.Sylvesters college at Kandy District Track & Field meet

St.Sylvesters college won th third place at the Kandy District Track & Field meet. It was organized by the Kandy District Athletic Association held at the Bogambara Stadium over the week-end.


Over 60 teams of girls and boys participated in this annual competition held for the 10th year. The Chief Guest on the opening day was Nandana Wickremage, Group Director, Head of Marketing and Sales of Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. and the Guest of Honour was Gamini Kulatunge, Supdt. of Prisons, Kandy.

On the final day, the Chief Guest was K. Kekulandara, the Secretary of the Chief Ministry & the Ministry of Education, Central Province.

The Explorer Quality Circle of St.Sylvester's College has won the Deming award atICQCC 2009 (International Convention on Students’ Quality Control Circles)  held in Lucknow,India.This was the 1st ever international award for St.Sylvester's College

CRICKET: Mediam Pacer Chanaka Ranaweera took 6 for 30 for St. Sylvestian College to dismiss Kegalu Vidyalaya for paltry 83 in their schools Lemonade Trophy cricket tournament match which began at Police Ground, Kandy yesterday.

Chanaka Ranaweera who has been in deadly form with the ball has now captured over 40 wickets. His opening bowling partner Ravi Karunaratne captured 3 for 36 too have exceeded the 40 wickets mark.

The Sylvestrians in their turn at the wickets did not fare too well as they collapsed from a healthy 56 for 2 to 82 for 7. Then they lost their next two wickets at 96 before a last ditch stand took them to 115. M.A.A.M. Marasinghe bowled best to capture 3 for 26.

But their spin twins Saliya Tennakoon and Lahiru Pathirana who captured 195 wickets between them last season failed to impress, getting one wickets each.

The inter-school cricket tournament match between St. Sylvester’s College and Kingswood College ended in a draw at the police ground in Kandy on Monday.

Chanaka Ranaweera of St Sylvester’s hogged the limelight with a match bag of 10 for 98 and a fine knock of 89 runs.

Kingswood taking first lease of the wicket managed only 135 and in reply the Sylvestrians posted 286/ 8. In their second turn, the Kingswoodians fared better making 306. At close, the Sylvestrians were 55/3.

Old boy Bishop Joseph Vianney Fernando



Bishop Joseph Vianney Fernando was born on Aug. 6, 1942 at Minuwangoda, in the archdiocese of Colombo . He was ordained a priest on Dec. 21, 1966 and his Episcopal ordination was on May 21, 1983. Bishop Vianney received his education at St. Sylvester College, Kandy and followed his higher education at the University of St. Paul's Ottawa Canada in 1977 and got the B.A. of the University of Peradeniya in 1973.

Bishop Vianney was the President of the Catholic Bishop's Conference in Sri Lanka and chairman for the Joseph Vaz Secretariate as well as vice-chairman for the catholic commission for missionary activity. He was the chairman of Caritas Sri Lanka from 2001 to 2003.

He was the President of Catholic Bishop's Conference of Sri Lanka 1995 to 1998, 2004 to 2010 and President of Caritas Asia. Further, he served as executive chairman of Federation of Asian Bishops' Conference for human development from 1995 to 1999, member of the Pre-Synodal Council, Synod, and Post Synodal Council of the special Synod of Bishops for Asia from 1995 to date and was a member of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum" from 1980 to 1989. Since 1995 to date, he is a member of the Pontifical Council for Inter Religious Dialogue, the Commission for Emergency Relief and Refugees as well as the Catholic Commission for the National Social Cooperation.

St. Sylvester's College Kandy were restricted to 209 for 9 in another match played in Kandy which Maliyadeva batsmen chased the target losing 7 wickets. The home team batted first and R Jayaratne led the Maliyadeva bowling attack to take 3 for 29. Thineth Manishka, C Huruggamuwa and H G Jayantha took two wickets each.

St. Sylvester's College, Kandy, a household name in boxing in the fifties and sixties stamped their class and bounced back into recognition when they became champions at the 40th L.V. Jayaweera Memorial Boxing Champion organized by the School Boxing Association of Sri Lanka and sponsored by MAS Linea Clothing - a subsidiary of MAS Holdings of BOI, Pallekelle and worked off at the Kengalle Navodaya Maha Vidyalaya last Tuesday night.
It was a night of Sylvestrians moment of glory as their boxers fought with a lot of ferocity to vanquish their opponents reminiscent of the days in the sixties boxers in the calibre of Olympic boxer Malcolm Bulner, Michael Bulner, Christopher Bulner and Tito Bulner, Lloyd Hope, D.C. Weerasinghe, G.A.S. Gunasinghe, Nimal Lewke, just to name a few who use to demolish their opponents in the sixties. The Silvestrians had five winners in a competition which permitted only a maximum of 7 participants from each and this will give some indication to the extent the Sylvstrians would have denominated the meet.
The Sylvestrian boxers produced exhilarating displays in the semi-finals and there was a clear indication by day 3 that they will have a tilt at the trophy. The winners for St. Sylvester's were V.S.B. Senanayake, W.A. Sampath, M.N.M. Rimshard, Y.R.C. Bandara and M.A.M. Ashik.
The Principal of St. Sylvester's College Ranil Meetiyagoda who was present throughout the finals said they are great and once again the boxing in the school has been brought back to its pristine glory. Our next target is T.B. Jayah Memorial Boxing meet and the coveted Stubbs Shield.
St. Sylvester's College accumulated 34 points to become clear winners against the 23 points collected by the runners-up Vidyaratane University Pirivena, Horana. In third place was little known Kantale Maha Vidyalaya, Kantale with 15 points. In fourth place was Sri Sumangala College with 11 points. Royal College, Colombo, Dharmaraja College, Kandy and the defending champions Peradeniya Central College were placed fifth with each collecting 10 points.
