St. Sylvester’s a formidable outfit
St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy will be fielding a very formidable side during the current inter-school cricket season and has the potential to call the shots against any school team.
During the past they have been performing well and their year of reckoning was in 1994 when they won the All Island Schools Division One Cricket Tournament for the Coca Cola trophy which was earlier won only by St. Anthony’s College who then had in their fold a star-studded side including Muthiah Muralitharan, Piyal Wijetunga and Ruwan Kalpage who went on to play for the national team.
St, Sylvester’s College will be led by fourth-year coloursman Ruwantha Ekanayake a steady left-hand bat and a leg-spinner who also has experience playing Sara Trophy club cricket for Kandy Youth Cricket Club.
Last season he scored 820 runs and also captured 30 wickets. Waruna Wijesinghe is the vice captain of the side who scored 650 runs last season and also captured 30 wickets with his medium pacers.
In-form batsman Fais Ahamed has turned out to be a belligerent bat reeling off runs very quickly. In one match this term he scored 90 runs in just 35 balls which included 6 sixes and 10 fours and Sylvesterians will expect much from him.
The others who should be in the runs are 15-year-old H Perera, Dushan Malalasena, Saradha Disanayake, Indunil Samararatna and Janitha Perera,
The bowling attack will be spearheaded by Waruna Wijesinghe and Indunil Samararatna. Their strong point will be their spin department which will comprise Ruwantha Ekanayake, Fais Ahamed, Dushan Malalasena, Sumedha Dissanayake, Nimesha Mendis and Dilan de Mel.
Nimesha Mendis has been bowling well, having captured 40 wickets last year, and has already taken 35 wickets this season.
Those who are looking for places in the side are Dilan de Mel, Dilip Maduranga, Harsha Wedikkara, Dhananjaya Hettiarachchi, M Nimesha Piyaratne, Chandula Hassantha, Sandeep Singh, Upendra Kumara, and Chamal Samararatne.
The team is coached by old Sylvestarian Roland Perera who has taken over the coaching after a lapse of five years.
In 1994, Roland coached St. Sylvester’s College to go on to win the schools Division One championship title. He will be assisted by Sankalpa Gunasekara who has played top level club cricket for Sri Lanka Air Force and Kandy Youth and also has coaching experience with Kingswood College and St Sylvester’s College in the past.

52nd Battle Of The Babes – Between St. Sylvester’s And Vidyartha
This is the third big match of Kandy, between St. Sylvester’s and Vidyartha, called the “Battle of the Babes.” It will be played on March 19 and 20. Out of the 51 games played St. Sylvester’s is leading in wins with 12 to Vidyartha’s 4. This year two day match drawn.
Sylvestrians scented victory with Vidyartha on 83 for 8 and a lead of under 10 runs, but a brake with ninth wicket stand of fifty five unbroken between Kheshan Gamage and Tilina Rupasena saved Vidyartha’s blushes in their drawn Big Match at the Asgiriya Stadiuym.
Earlier, Sylvestrians Ruwantha Ekanayake (74) and Dileepa Gayeshan had combined to produce 146 for the fifth wicket. Wijesinghe (43) also batted well at the top of the order. Spinners Attanayake and Wickremasinghe bagged 3 each for Vidyartha.The Sylvestrians had Vidyartha in a firm grip, but they couldn’t break the ninth wicket partnership. They did most of the running, but could not come out on top.

One day game St.Stlvesters College bat first they got 213 in 50 overs. Viththiyartha college were all out for 80 runs. St.Sylvestrs won the match by 133 runs. they got the Rev. Fr. Don George Trophy 2010,

Battle of the Babes 2010 (SSCK vs VCK Big Match)
A close tussle is expected when St. Sylvester's College, Kandy, takes on Vidyartha College in the 52nd "Battle of the Babes" which will be played at the Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy, on March 19 and 20. Play commences at 9.45 a.m. on the first day and at 9.30 a.m. on the following day.
This battle came to be known as the "Battle of the Babes" as both schools were comparatively new to the schools cricket scene at that time and the big match took root in the mid fifties. But can you any longer call them babes as they are now 52 years old?
Of the 51 battles which had been fought out, the Sylvestians are in the lead with 13 wins against 3 by Vidyartha College. Last year, the Sylvestrians under Chanaka Colombage won through a default and the Match Referee awarded the match to the Sylvestrians.
The Sylvestrians needed 10 runs to win with 8 wickets in hand and with plenty of overs remaining. The two umpires stopped play around 5.10 p.m. due to bad light.
But twenty minutes later, when the light had further deteriorated came to the middle and wanted play to be resumed. But, Vidyartha College team did not come out, stating that it was unsafe to continue play.
Thus history was created when a big match was awarded first time to one of the teams. In any event there was no question about a Sylvestrian victory, as they were very close it.
The last win for Vidyartha College came in 1967 under the captaincy of R. M. Lafir. Lafir retired as DIG two years ago. Thus Vidyartha College have a 42-year-old 'jinx' to break.
