Sylvesters Beat Carey College Colombo

   

      St. Sylvester's College, Kandy drubbed Carey College, Colombo by 67 points (6 goals, 5 tries) to 6 (2 penalties) in their schools Singer Shield Division One Segment C Rugby Tournament match played at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy. At half time the Sylvestrian's led 41-3.

This was Sylvestrian's second win for the season and now they are in a safer position of being relegated to the lower division as at the start of the season they suffered four straight losses before they beat Mahanama College 37-34 to keep their chances alive.

The Sylvestrians increased their tally in this match but in the last 15 minutes due to several substitutions and also Carey College put up a better defence from them piling up a bigger score.

The try scorers for St. Sylvester's College were skipper and No. 8 Lasitha Attanagoda (2), flanker D.G. Wijetillake (2), stand off K.N. Hewaliyanage (2), winger Ishan Rajapakse (1), centre S.M. Dissanayake (1), lock S.M. Samarakoon (2), centre P. Arvindan (1), winger Ishan Rajapakse goalled 5 tries and No. 8 Lasitha Attanagoda goalled the other try. For Carey College full back M.A. Akram converted the two penalties.

Rugby Match - St. Sylvester's Vs Dharmaraja College

Dharmaraja College beat St. Sylvester's by 71 (8 goals, 3 tries)to 26 (1 goal, 2 tries, 3 penalties at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium, Kandy yesterday. 

At half time, Rajans led 24-19.

When play kicked off it was the Sylvestrians who appeared to hold sway.

Rajans scored first through flanker Malinda Herath which was goalled by full back Thilina       Wijesinghe.

But it did not take long before the Sylvestrians took over the lead through a try scored by flanker Ravin which was goalled by winger Ishan Rajapaksa who also put over a penalty to be in front 10-3. Another penalty fired by Ishan Rajapaksa saw St Sylvester’s lead 13-7.

In the 20th minute, Dharmaraja’s No 8 Locahana Ekanayake using speed and power breached the opponents defence to touch down and Thilina Wijesinghe added the extra points. Rajan were leading 14-13.

A try in the 25th minute by centre Malinda Herath saw the Rajans extend their lead to 19-13.

In the 32nd minute centre Migara Hewawasam squeezed through a gap to score far left. Rajans led 24-13. 

The Sylvestrians reduced the Rajans lead through two penalties fired by winger Ishan Rajapaksa one of which was a 48-metre effort against the wind. 

St Sylvester’s 19-24. But the second half belonged to the Rajans who punched holes in the opponents defence through full back Thilina Wijesinghe (1), centre Tharuka Wickremanayake (1) and finally winger Lahiru Fernando’s five tries in a row. For St Sylvester’s in the second half, prop Mohamed Faud scored a try and Ishan Rajapaksa added the extra points. Priyantha Gunaratne refereed.

Sylvestrians got the highest score against Rajans this season. But we really need a win for this season.

Sylvestrien old boy Aruna one of the finest referees

Aruna Krishantha Rankothge, an old boy of St Sylvester’s College, Kandy is rated as one of the finest referees at present.

Having learnt rugby in his Alma Mater where he represented the school in the ninetees, Aruna later went on to play for Kandy Sports Club from 1991 to 1993 as centre as well as wing forward in the Clifford Cup and Caltex tournaments.

With the knowledge he gained playing his school as well as Kandy Sports Club he started refereeing and he has come on top at the International Panel Referees in the last six years.

Aruna has refereed the Bradby Shield match between Trinity and Royal for a number of years while training in the game of rugby in Wales, UK and Thailand. He also has the distinction of refereeing the following tournaments.

a) World Cup qualifying matches in China in the year 2004.

b) Asst. Referee World Cup Qualifying matches in India in 2005.

c) Inter Refereeing the International Singapore Sevens Rugby Tournament in the year 2005/06.

d) Officiating as a Referee in the South East Asian Sevens in Thailand in the year 2007.

e) Under 20 World Cup qualifying matches in South Korea in the year 2008.

f) Refereeing the Asian Division II Tournament in Philippines in the year 2009 and also Asst. Referee at the Asian Fi-nations Division I Rugby Tournament, in Dubai this year.

School rugby’s record try-scorer Mohamed Rinaz recalls feat

Holder of the Sri Lanka schools rugby try-scoring record Rinaz Mohamed says that his harvest of 33 tries in 2001 is now worth more than what it ever was after witnessing the concluded League season that his old school St. Peter’s College won.

“The 33 record tries amazed me, but now looking back I am more proud than I ever was”, said Rinaz who is back in Sri Lanka from studies in England. Rinaz was the star performer in the 2001 season in which his powerful runs made him the most feared winger at the time.

He could have also become a top class athlete but contends that he preferred a team sport. “I did enjoy my athletics, but I wanted to be a team player not just an individual”, said Rinaz who has enrolled at CR and FC.
Having crossed over to St. Peter’s College from St. Sylvester’s College in Kandy to pursue a rugby career at the age of 14, Rinaz said he had no words to describe how his life changed.

“I owe it to St. Peter’s College. They gave me more than I ever dreamed of. My life has changed in so many ways and I can call myself a professional in many ways”, said Rinaz who also scored 36 tries playing for an English side called Milwall Rugby Club last season.

Sylvester -Vidyartha Rugby encounter to be played for a trophy

The Vidyartha and St. Sylvester’s rugby encounter this year will be played for a trophy. The match was scheduled to be played on August 5 at the Nittawela ground but has been postponed by a week to August 12 due to the non availability of the grounds.
It is understood that the trophies are to be named in memory of two past principals, the late Bertie Nilagoda of St Sylvester’s who re-introduced rugby to the school in the mid 1980’s and Vidyartha’s late PML Banda.
Rugby football made a modest start in 1954 at St. Sylvester’s. That year they played only one game, against the University of Peradeniya and lost by 6 point to 16.
Malcolm Marshall who later played for the Navy and Defence Services was the first captain of St Sylvester’s. Bobby Jayaweera was the first coach and the Rector was Rev. Fr. Robert Perera. After a few years the school gave up the game and it was re-introduced by the late Bertie Nilagoda in 1986.

Bad news for Sylvesters Rugby Team

St Sylvester’s players suspended

The disciplinary committee of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) has decided to suspend for the rest of the schools rugby season all players who played against Royal Panadura in the Singer Under 20 Division 1C rugby encounter three weeks ago.

The disciplinary action was taken on Saturday on a written complaint made by Royal Panadura who won the match where 12 of their players were admitted to the hospital after sustaining injuries.

Denzil Darling the secretary and convenor of SLSRFA speaking to the Daily Mirror said the decision was unanimous with all members of the discipline committee agreeing to the decision.

He further stated that the disciplinary committee was not satisfied with the report given by the officials of St Sylvester’s and hence they decided to suspend all players whose name appeared in the team card given to the match commissioner before the match.

There were contradictions of statements given which we were not satisfied and we felt that something had taken place. We also decided that St Sylvester’s could play the rest of the tournament matches and they can do so fielding players whose name do not appear in the given team card.

This is a serious matter and it must be stopped at any cost and this punishment is also a warning for the other teams too, maybe in the top or bottom category.
The match was a crucial one for both the teams which ultimately ended in Royal Panadura winning 22-20. The defeat of the home team saw the visiting Royal Panadura boys being assaulted unmercifull
