St. Sylvester's athlete Asardeen three 'firsts' ( hat-trick wins) in dual meet in Chennai

Three events - three firsts. That was the proud achievement of St. Sylvester's College, Kandy athlete H.A.M. Asardeen in the Dual Athletic Meet between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu at the Nehru Stadium in Chennai between 19th to 24th December 2011. Asardeen running in the under 14 age group for boys, came first in the 100 metres in 12.3 seconds, 200 metres again first in 25.5 seconds and first in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.42 metres.

Asardeen is a Year 10 student of St. Sylvester's College, Kandy and is a talented athlete with a bright future. He qualified to run in the meet in Chennai when he won all three events at the Junior Athletic Meet of Lanka Lions Sports Club held early last year.

On your marks and H.A.M. Asardeen (on left) is set to take off in the final of the 100 metres for boys under 14 running for Sri Lanka against Tamil Nadu in the dual Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Asardeen won the event in 12.3 seconds. He also won the 200 metres and the long jump events. Altogether there were 32 runners who competed from the heats in the 100 metres event.

St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy will field one of the strongest combinations in schools this season, as they posses a well knit side with many all-rounders who could deliver the goods. They have achieved this the hard way as they do not have a playground of their own. They only have a small playing field which is only good for practising and matches cannot be played as the ground itself is very small and devoid of grass.

College cricket team 2011/2012

St. Sylvester’s College will be led this year by all-rounder and fourth year coloursman Ruwantha Ekanayaka. A very good left hand bat who scored over 800 runs last season and also captured 40 wickets with his right arm leg spinners. Another fourth year coloursman Waruna Wijesinghe is the vice captain of the side. He will spear the attack which brought him a haul of 30 wickets last season. He also scored 650 runs last season and was one of the mainstays of the side.St. Sylvester’s College will be led this year by all-rounder and fourth year coloursman Ruwantha Ekanayaka. A very good left hand bat who scored over 800 runs last season and also captured 40 wickets with his right arm leg spinners.

The team is coached by former Sylvestrian and Kandy Youths CC captain Roland Perera, who has returned to coaching St. Sylvester’s College after a lapse of six years. It must be recalled that cricket at St. Sylvester’s College took the high spots under the guidance of Roland Perera in 1994 when they became all-island schools Division One cricket champions and won the Coca Cola Trophy. That was their best ever cricket season. Assisting Roland Perera in his coaching endeavours is another Old Sylvestrian Gunasekera who coached them on an earlier occasion and also coached Kingswood College. He has played Sara Trophy cricket for Sri Lanka Air Force and Kandy Youths Cricket Club. In batting Faiz Ahamed has improved leaps and bounds, paying scant respect to the opponents bowling. This season against President’s College, he slammed a quick fire 90 in just 35 balls which included six sixes and 10 fours and over exuberance denied him the chance of scoring the fastest hundred this season.

Apart from this trio the others who could be relied upon for runs are Dushan Malalasena, Sumedha Dissanayake, 15-year-old Hansamal Perera (son of the famous St. Sylvester’s Mervyn Perera), Nimesha Mendis, Dilan Mel. Waruna Wijesinghe will open the attack with one of the freshers. But it is their spin attack which has to be feared having a crop of left-arm spinners like Sumedha Dissanayake, Nimesha Mendis and Dushan Malalasena who have bowled with venom and guile this season to have their opponents groping. Two other spinners Dilan Mel, Faiz Ahamed and Indunil Samarananda too have bowled well this season.

In Ranil Meetiyagoda they have a school head who gives the boys a lot of encouragement along with the Deputy Principal Sports - A.K.B. Dodanwela.

The Sylvestrians could look forward to a very successful season this year.

The others in the pool are Dilip Maduranga, Harsha Wedikara, Dananjaya Hettiarachchi, Nimesha Piyaratne, Chandula Hasantha, Janitha Perera, Sandeep Singh, Upendra Kumara, Chamal Samararatne and J Kugaprashan.

Fifth Road Race of St. Sylvester's Kandy

The fifth annual Road Race of St. Sylvester's College organised by the School and the Old Boys worked off in Kandy Yesterday (Sunday), January 22nd commencing at 7.30 a.m.

Over 300 competitors under various age groups were participated in this event 15 kilometres distance. The race started opposite St. Sylvester's College and the runners werw proceed through Asgiriya Junction, Mahaiyawa, Wattaramtenna, Bahirawakanda Junction, Primrose Hill, Dodanwela Junction, Peradeniya Road and the finished opposite St. Sylvester's College.

Ishak Sahabdeen, a distinguished old boy of St. Sylvester's College who is a double international representing the country at both cricket and hockey, the chief guest. He also excelled in soccer and athletics. Lalith Boyagoda in his capacity as Chairman, Sports Committee and the President of St. Sylvester's College OBA, Gamini Ratnayake are handling all arrangements.

Also gracing the occasion as guest of honour was Past OBA President Dr. Maithri Rajapakse, Malcolm Perera and S. Mahinda along with the Principal of the School Ranil Meetiyagoda and Deputy Principal (Sports) A.K.B. Dodanwela.

Sylvestrian Malcolm Perera resigns as Manager of Coaching of SLC

Malcolm Perera one of the most senior cricket coaches in the island has relinquished duties as the Manager of Coaching at Sri Lanka Cricket after serving cricket with the governing body for over 15 years.

Malcolm Perera started his cricket career at St Sylvesters College, Kandy, as an opening batsman in the late sixties and had grace and style in his batting whilst scoring consistently. He also played hockey for his school and later for the Kandy District.

His first cricket coaching assignment was at St Sylvesters College and changed the complexion of the game in that school. The school progressed at cricket under his stewardship and their performances helped them in a big way to get fixtures from bigger schools like St Sebastian's College, St Peters' College for example, a change from playing lesser known schools. He was the cricket coach of Ishak Sahabdeen who later became the first double international from St Sylvester's College having represented the country at cricket and hockey.

His talents as a cricket coach was spotted by no less than the Australian cricket coaches Lee Lenham and Peter Philpott who in separate coaching assignments in Sri Lanka found Malcolm Perera a fine coach who could identify talents and sharpen their skills and could influence and motivate anyone to give out his best. He also topped the marks in the coaches examination.

From St Sylvesters College he moved over to Kingswood College, a school which was faring very poorly at school cricket at that time.

The previous season they had the dismal record of recording seven outright defeats. But with his coaching skills, he was able to stop this rot and they were able to hold their own against any strong opposition thus giving a new dimension to cricket at Kingswood.

He was at this time employed at the Physical Education Department of University of Peradeniya. An advertisement in the local press for the post of Director Coaching at the then Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka appeared.

Though one of the requirements was that the applicant should have played cricket at national level, which he did not possess but he still applied in a 'hit or miss' attempt. If he was not selected he had nothing to lose but he was confident that he could get over this problems with his other coaching qualification and persuasive ways. Though many national cricketers applied to this post but Malcolm Perera forged above them and was appointed to the post.

What was most important was not the level of cricket you had played but your coaching skills and proven track record. Having held the post of Director Coaching of Sri Lanka Cricket for nearly 10 years, he went over to Bangladesh to assume duties as the Junior National Cricket coach where he once again stamped his class.

Some of his products like Tamim Iqbal, Kaushik Mortasa, Mohamed Ashraful, Naim Islam, Javid Islam, Hafeez Iqbal, have made it to the Bangladesh National cricket team. He also had a coaching stint at Malaysia at national level.

On his return to the country, he was appointed Manager Coaching at Sri Lanka Cricket and also later to the Cricket Development section as well, where he contributed immensely for the development of cricket especially in the provinces. No coach in Kandy could match his record.

He has also coached and captained Kandy Cricket Club and Kandy Youths cricket club at Sara Trophy cricket before the days of the Premier League.

His return to Kandy will benefit cricket in the hill capital in a big way when he resumes his coaching of the cricketers from the kiddies level.

Roland Perera to coach Sylvestrians

Venue Manager at the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium at the recently concluded World Cup Roland Perera will coach St. Sylvesters’ College at the forthcoming cricket season.

Roland Perera is no stranger to St. Sylvester’s as he played with distinction as allrounder in the seventies and later coached the school for 12 years during which time they lost just one match. The high point of his career a cricket coach was when St. Sylverster’s College became all island schools under 19 Division One champions to win the Coca Cola Trophy in 1994.

They had to compete with leading schools in the island to win this plum. The sylvestrians were only the second school from the hill capital to win the schools division one title, the other being St. Anthony’s College which won in 1991 fielding a star studded side captained by Ruwan Kalpage, Legendary Muthiah Muralitharan, Piyal Wijetunga, Sajith Fernando, M. Ajaz, Umesh de Alwis, Nuwan Kalpage and others.

Roland Perera who is an experienced coach also played Sara trophy cricket for Moors Sports Club, Kandy Youths Cricket Club and Kandy Cricket Club during the various stages of his career.

As a cricket administrator, he has been the Secretary of the Kandy District Cricket Association and the Central Province Cricket Association, besides being the President of the Kandy branch of the Association of Cricket Umpires of Sri Lanka. He was the Treasurer of the Kandy District CA and held the post of President of Kandy Youths CC.

He is also the Regional selector of the Sri Lanka Cricket for the Central Province.

A highly experienced cricket coach with exceptional skills to extract the best out of a cricketer, the Sylverstrians should ride high once again under his guidance.

Sylvestrian Niluka top wicket taker in under 19 cricket competitions 2011

Niluka Dilshan Kandaddarage of St. Sylvester's College Kandy has taken 60 wickets in under 19 cricket competitions. He started his cricketing career in the fourth year in school and led the under 12 and under 13 teams.

In an under 17 tournament game Niluka scored an unbeaten 72 against St. Anthony's College Katugastota and followed it up with 68 against Maliyadeva Kurunegala. Turning out for the under 19 team Niluka captured 4 for 37 against Ananda, 4 for 45 against Rahula College Matara, 3 for 56 against S. Thomas' Mt. Lavinia, 5 for 41 against Dharmapala Pannipitiya, 5 for 38 against Kingswood Kandy.

His performance (6 for 53) against Vidyartha in the Big Match won him the trophy for the Best Bowler in the match. In the 50 over game against Vidyartha he got 3 wickets for 18 runs in addition to having scored 39 runs. These performances earned him the awards of Best Batsman and the Man of the Match. Whilst still at school he also turned out for Kandy CC against Moratuwa St. Sebastianites CC and captured 6 wickets

The International Federation of Purchasing & Supply Management (IFPSM) recently recognized and honoured the contribution and services rendered by the veteran management consultant Gerald A Hidelaratchi in the field of Supply Chain Management in Sri Lanka recently. IFPSM presented Hidelaratchi with this award of recognition at a felicitation ceremony held at the auditorium of the Organization of Professional Associations (OPA) on the 21st of January 2011. The award was presented by Charles Holden – Director General of IFPSM.

Gerry Hidelaratchi covers 38 years with the Institute of Supply & Materials Management (ISMM) in Sri Lanka of which he was a founding member. He has served the ISMM in different capacities over the years, as its President from 1990 – 1995 and was also the Vice President of IFPSM – the world body - from 1994 – 1996. His contribution, both locally and internationally was well recognized by the IFPSM and other management institutions. His involvement with IFPSM in Supply Chain Management spans well over 25 years and to date he serves as the Senior Delegate of ISMM. Mr. Hidelaratchi is a fellow of ISMM, FCIMA, CCM and HFSUNFO. He has been conferred the highest management qualification of "Companion" by the Chartered Institute of Management – UK.

Hidelaratchi counts widespread experience in the management filed and has served many local and international organizations, spearheading change with foresight. He is a past President of the Organization of Professional Associations (OPA) – a professional body that serves as an umbrella organization for the professional associations in Sri Lanka, with approximately 50 professional associations and 50,000 members under their backing. He has held senior positions in several public sector organizations, state corporations as well as public quoted companies in Sri Lanka as MD and CEO. His international exposure includes serving the UNCTAD/ ITC and as a Marketing Consultant of CFTC of the Commonwealth Secretariat UK, working for the government of Antigua – West Indies. Mr. Hidelaratchi has travelled extensively and has served in trade delegations to UK, India, Pakistan and the Middle-East while heading ISMM teams at many world summits. He also lead the Sri Lanka – China Society delegation to China in 2009.

He is a Vice President of the Sri Lanka-China Society and a Committee Member of the Sri Lanka–Australia–New Zealand Association (SLANZA) as well as a member of numerous other associations and bodies. He has served the Disciplinary Committee of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board and is a versatile sportsman who has represented his college in several sports and represented the University of Ceylon in Athletics, Cricket, Soccer, and Basket Ball. He was the Vice President of the Sports Council of the University in 1961 to 1962.

As a pupil of St. Sylvester’s College in Kandy, he excelled in his studies as well as sports alike. He was appointed the Head Prefect of the School and was also the Captain of the school Cricket and Soccer 1st Eleven teams. He was also a rare recipient of the coveted "Cingolani Gold Medal" – for The Best All Round Student" in 1958.

Principal’s Message

I wish the dawned year 2011 a very prosperous one. We have strode on to year 2011 with exhilaration of commemorating the 70th Anniversary of our College with great pride. A school is an institute which is comprised of live and active gathering of persons. It is our responsibility to pave the way and give our assistance to the heirs of the future generation to those who come here along with the leadership in that endeavor.

It is the very reason that the teachers who cherished the yester years were worshipped in the frame of deities as they were dedicated and honest in their tasks. Not with standing selfishness, the real teacher work so as to enlighten the tomorrow of the student who comes in search of the assistance of the teacher on the event of making the student's tomorrow a better one.

We know you, the present members of such s teaching community, are also capable of dedicating your time as the teachers of yester years have done. We kindly request you to give your fullest service for the sake of our children.

There are a lot of challenges that we should win during the period which commences from 2011 to 2015, in which the 75th Anniversary of our College is to be commemorated.

1.Qualitative and Quantitative improvement of the Examination results of the School.
2.Increasing the percentage of students those who enter the University.
3.Moulding the overall development of the students so as to make them a real Sylvestrian gentleman.

Cricket At St. Sylvester’s – A Proud History

A school which has reached great heights in the field of cricket is St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy. The school is celebrating its 70th year this year and during this period it has had a proud cricketing history. Over the years the school has produced some fine cricketers who have gone on to represent top clubs, the district, and the country with distinction. The school’s past cricketers are now planning to organise a six-a-side tournament among the Kandy schools’ past cricketers.

In 1955 St. Sylvester’s College made a modest beginning by playing a few inter school matches. Their first inter school match was against Vidyartha College, which is today their big match.

The first school team was coached by J.Denlow and Ronnie Stephen. The side was led by T. Direckze and had players like Nihal Pelpola, T. Sathyamurthi, H. Dias, T.G.M. Peries, N. Ratnayake, Vernon Nanayakkara, V. Croos, U.Ariya Chandra, I. Heppenstol, M. Direckze, V.W. Wanigasekara, R.Tilly, and U de Silva. The rector at the time was Fr. Paulinus Vedakapattany. It was M.E. Marikar who became the first Sylvestrian to play representative cricket, at a time when St. Sylvester’s College had not taken to cricket in a big way. He played for Moors SC, Sinha Regiment, Kandy Lake Club, Kandy Sports Club and Central Province. Nihal Samarasekara became the first to play for the country — before we got test status. Ishak Sahabdeen was the first test player, and then there was Nimal Lewke. A fine spinner, in 1967, he was placed second in the Schools’ Best Bowling list. He later played for the Police and Government Services. Malcolm Perera, the present Sri Lanka Cricket Coaching Manager, his brothers Anton and Roland, David brothers — Gerad, Kingsley, Sydney and Rodney, N. Herathge, Jayatilake brothers — Rangith and Bandu, Gerry Alexander Hidalarachchi, and Mervyn Rodrigo all did well. Rodrigo was the first Silvestrian to win the ‘best outstation school boy’ award.

Some of the other outstanding players were T. Thirimane, Iqbal Haniffa, Rajarathne brothers Prasana and A.S., Sarath Basnayake, Nimal Rajakaruna, Motha brothers Quintus and Brenly, Colombage brothers Edward and Ranjith, Sena L Wijesinghe, Hassan brothers T. Undoubtedly 1994 was the greatest year for St. Sylvester’s cricket. Under Roland Perera’s coaching and late Bertie Nilagoda’s stewardship as principal, the school won the all Island League Championship but they were deprived of the ‘double,’ when they got knocked out in the semi final by Ananda College.

St. Sylvester's earned a name in the early days.

Boxing No. 1 choice
It was in Boxing

The best boxer to come out of this school was Malcolm Bulner. He represented Sri Lanka at the Olympics and became the first to do so from this school, he was later selected to represent Australia in the next Olympic Games. He was deprived of achieving this feat for technical reasons. Malcolm Bulner who later became an Australian national, qualified as a world class boxing judge and officiated at several boxing meets in Australia.

Malcolm Bulner, a south paw, was the best boxer produced by Derrick Raymond, the famous coach, who passed away few years back in England. Malcolm won several national awards and titles in Sri Lanka before he migrated to Australia. His two brothers Noel and Clifford too were good boxers in lower weight categories.

Boxing was flourishing at St. Sylvester's, the Stubb's Shield Boxing competition, was a meet dominated by St Sylvester's.

The first Sylvesterian to win a national boxing title was Donald G. Labrooy the boxer who won the first national boxing title for the school. Donald at that time was shining in the Clifford Cup meets and was a strong claimant to represent Ceylon at the Olympics, the Bantamweight title in the early 1950's. Then there was Ellsworth Pereira, A.M. Nanayakkara, I.R. Hepponstall, Nihal Pelpolla, T.M. Pathirana, R. Aluwihare, Malcolm Marshal, Milroy Soysa, Annesly Soysa, M.E. Marikar to name a few.

This account of boxers is incomplete without mentioning the Master-in-Charge Roy Amarasinghe who was the architect of their victories at the Stubb's Shield competitions.
Boxing was a landmark of St. Sylvester's and in this respect their boxing coaches and masters should be complimented.

The other Sylvesterians who excelled in the ring were Nimal Lewke, one of the stylish boxers in the country who has won many bouts at national and International meets. Nimal was more than once adjudged the best boxer at national meets. He is now a Senior DIG of the Police, M. Reyal, A.C.R. Herathge, S.A. Azwer, H. Edwin, J. Peterson, C. Weerasinghe, T.S. Hassan, Derick Gunasinghe, M.Z. Abdeen, A. Thirukumaran, S.J. Sumanaweera, A. Amunugama.
Athletics: In the early 1940's when the school was only a few years old they produced an athlete who broke a public school record and was one of the country's crack sprinters.
The athlete was Felix Samarawickrema. Felix who later joined St. Joseph's College, Colombo lowered the Public School's 440 yards record with a timing of 51.8 sec. in 1948. At the same meet he won the 100 yards sprint. Felix was chosen to represent the country at the Empire Games in 1949 along with Duncan White but had to pull out due to a muscle injury and Vivan Blaze took his place.

Football popular

Football: That was another popular sport at St. Sylvester's from the inception in 1940 to late 1960's. They were in the forefront of Kandy schools football. Some played for the Central Province and the Country, the best among them were Mahinda Aluwihare who led the country on many times, he was rated as one of the beat mid field players in Asia.
Hockey: Most of hockey players have done well and they have been playing in tournaments from mid 1940's.
Cricket: In 1955, Sylvesterians made a modest beginning by playing a few inter-school matches. Their first inter-college match was against Vidyartha College, which is their big match now.
M.E. Marikar became the first Sylvesterian to play for many local cricket team at a time when St. Sylvester's College had not taken to cricket, he played for Moors SC, Sinha Regiment, Kandy Lake Club, Kandy Sports Club and Central Province, the next was M. Razak who played for Prisons.
It was Nihal Samarasekara who first played for the country, before we got Test status, Ishak Shabdeen was the fist Test player, then there was Nimal, a fine spinner who at one time was second in the Schools Bowling Averages.
Rugby: As in the field of cricket, Rugby football made a modest start in 1954. It should be remembered that Rugger, as it is commonly known, needs much practice.
There were some Sylvesterians who played club rugger without playing for the school, to name a few: Cyril Aluwihare, Hector Gallage, Sarath Basnayake, Gerard David, J. Jamilon, Lucky Peries, E. Peries, Nimal Lewke he is the man who went up in the game of rugby.
He played for Kandy SC, from there he played for Police SC led the side to win the Clifford Cup, and later played for the country, and became a top referee and coach, and had the privilege of being the national coach, and also headed the SLRFU and the Referees Society, and finally became the President of the SLRFU in 2007/8.

St. Sylvester’s Celebrates 70th Anniversary

St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy creates history in the educational arena of the Hill Capital, as it celebrates its 70th anniversary on November 01, 2010.

Though living overseas, we rejoice over the occasion with just a few years to reach the Diamond Jubilee of our Alma Mater. The sound of bells conveys to us the message that Sylvestarians past as well as present, together with the principal and staff, the parents and well wishers are strongly committed to uphold the unblemished reputation of our college, with a series of dynamic strategies to commemorate the anniversary.

It is also coincidental to have an old Sylvestarian Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, as the Governor of the Central Province to lead the Sylvestarians’ “Walk to the Future” from the historical suburb Gatambe, to Kandy town to mark the occasion.

Setting up of a monument in the college premises in memory of our dear collegues who were Heros of the war, to liberate Mother Lanka and felicitation of the old boys are among highlights of the celebrations. Outstanding students will also receive their merits. In 1940, seventy years ago, when the saintly Rev. Fr. Robbert M Perera, pioneered this educational project it had only 245 students and a dozen of teachers as the tutorial staff. Today, the College has made a remarkable achievement as a prime national institute with over 3145 students and 155 member academic staff, under the guidance of the principal Ranil Meetiyagoda.

Initially, Fr. Robbert, as he was affectionately known served as the first principal until he assumed duties as the Rector in 1949. Thereafter the ever-green era under the principalship of D.J.N. Seneviratne, continued for a marathon period of 24 years. Mr. Seneviratne was so fortunate as to have a strong supporting staff. The able Head Master W.S.S. Janz, R.M. Amarasinghe, Pandit M.O. Fernando, Richard Abeysekera and Sinharachchi are a few of them. Messers K.S. Gunaratne, W.B. Gopallawa, Berly, Nillegoda, A.B. Herath, Abeysinghe and the successive principals also rendered yeomen service to the College.

The name and the fame of the College spread islandwide, not only for its public examination results but also for its high standard of discipline and extra mural performances. The Boys Scouting, Cricket and Boxing were gaining grounds.

Sylvestarians became famous when they repeatedly became the “Stubbs Shield” champions. The College located in the heart of the Kandy town, at present provides facilities to the students to reach the highest levels in education and in any social field.

To its great glory, during the past seven decades the college had produced high ranking and eminent citizens to serve the motherland. One time Governor Gen. Cyril Ranatunga a former commander of the SL Army, and the unfading political personality Percy Samaraweera are among these distinguished old boys.

St. Sylvester's College, Kandy emerged boys champions in the Under 15 Hockey Tournaments organised by the Kandy Municipal Playgrounds Department last weekend at St. Anthony's Girls College Grounds, Katugastota.

St. Sylvester's Kandy were champions with Kingswood College, Kandy - the runners-up and Trinity College, Kandy were placed third.
