Bad news for Sylvesters Rugby Team

St Sylvester’s players suspended

June 7

The disciplinary committee of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) has decided to suspend for the rest of the schools rugby season all players who played against Royal Panadura in the Singer Under 20 Division 1C rugby encounter three weeks ago.

The disciplinary action was taken on Saturday on a written complaint made by Royal Panadura who won the match where 12 of their players were admitted to the hospital after sustaining injuries.

Denzil Darling the secretary and convenor of SLSRFA speaking to the Daily Mirror said the decision was unanimous with all members of the discipline committee agreeing to the decision.

He further stated that the disciplinary committee was not satisfied with the report given by the officials of St Sylvester’s and hence they decided to suspend all players whose name appeared in the team card given to the match commissioner before the match.

There were contradictions of statements given which we were not satisfied and we felt that something had taken place. We also decided that St Sylvester’s could play the rest of the tournament matches and they can do so fielding players whose name do not appear in the given team card.

This is a serious matter and it must be stopped at any cost and this punishment is also a warning for the other teams too, maybe in the top or bottom category.
The match was a crucial one for both the teams which ultimately ended in Royal Panadura winning 22-20. The defeat of the home team saw the visiting Royal Panadura boys being assaulted unmercifull

One Sunday Observer article about him published before 12 years ago...

SLCFV to plan Chanaka's cricket future Down Under

By Bernie Wijesekera
Chanaka Wijesinghe, the 16-year-old lad from St. Sylvester's College, Kandy, a young future prospect, who has already received a 4 year sponsorship package from two Sri Lankans now domiciled in Victoria, Australia - namely David Crus and Bertie Ekanayake, is in further luck's way.
This sponsorship package was made possible, when the lad met Crus and Ekanayake at Asgiriya during the Sri Lanka-Zimbabwe Test match..
They were impressed with the performances of Wijesinghe, which resulted in a Rs. 50,000/- per year for him to learn and play. The initial cheque was handed over by Eddie Gray to Roy de Silva on behalf of the sponsors earlier at a simple ceremony.
On Tuesday (July 7), the lad along with his Prefect-of-Games Chandra Mahawattege, met Sri Lanka's cricket representative in Australia Dr. Quintus de Zilwa and Bertie Ekanayake to hand over his progress chart and for a further discussion, at Hotel Taj Samudra.
Incidentally, the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation in Victoria where the duo are key officials doing much for the development of sport in Sri Lanka.
Many talented players have benefitted from it in the past. Cricketers of the calibre of Aravinda de Silva and Roshan Mahanama are a few who are key members today in the national team. They have impressed at home and abroad, after a stint in Victoria and improved their skills - thanks to the SLCFV.
Ruwan Kalpage and left-arm spinner Gamini Perera, too were afforded an opportunity to play cricket in Victoria according to Ekanayake.
Plans are afoot for young Wijesinghe, to be given a similar opportunity of playing in Victoria once he completes his school academic career. This was revealed to The Sunday Times by Dr. Quintus de Zilwa. He further stated that the lad will be given the chance of playing for a leading club in Victoria. Ekanayake, will be in overall charge and play a role of a foster-father.
It won't stop there. He will undergo training in a leading coaching academy in Victoria and probably be sent to the A.I.S. Commonwealth Bank Academy, where Rod Marsh the legendary Aussie wicket-keeper, is the head coach.
According to Ekanayake, David Crus, who is the head of the Knox Tavern, is a key figure, who supports the SLCFV, with men and material.
If one is prepared to learn there are quite a number of opportunities for youngsters to further their academic careers i.e to learn and play and make their future stable. The SLCFV will look into this area, too said Ekanayake.
Wijesinghe was interviewed by this scribe:-
Q: How did you fare during the last season (1998), for your school cricket team.
A: Yes, I did reasonably well with the willow as a righthanded batsman. My best effort was 102 against Thurstan; followed by scores of 76 (Dharmaraja), 73 (Kingswood) and 71 (Mahinda). With this support rendered and encouragement given to me by the sponsors, I am confident of further improving my skills, with devotion and dedication, he nodded.
Q: What are your parents doing?
A: My father is a principal of a Junior school in Kadugannawa and mother too, is a teacher. They are giving all the support. In a family of five I am the youngest.
Q: So you are like Jonty Rhodes, the amiable S. African cricketer - one of the best fielders in the world. His parents, too are teachers. I hope you are not smashing windows like him, while playing cricket at home.
What made you take to cricket. And, who was your first coach?
A- I got interested, while watching this game as a kid. My idol is Roshan Mahanama. His approach on and off the field really interested me. My first coach was Roland Perera, (brother of Malcolm Perera, who is attached to the Cricket Board). At present Mr. Mahawattage is my coach.
The Principal of St. Sylvester's, Mr.A.B. Herath is a source of inspiration, not only to me, but for all young sportsmen. With him in the driving seat, the school is in the forefront in inter-school sports be it cricket, boxing, rugby etc. Incidentally in the past the school produced some fine pugilists the likes of the Bulner brothers, Herathge, Nimal Leuke, under Derek Raymond.
Q: What about your studies?
A: I am not going to neglect my studies merely because of cricket. I will be taking my O/L in Dec. '98. Studies and sports go hand in hand. I will pursue my A/L and will be keen to do Computer Science. My brother is a medical student.
According to Dr. Quintus de Zilwa, the SLCFV, who initiated the move to get Dav Whatmore, to coach in Sri Lanka is doubly keen to help talented young sportsmen to reach stardom and do proud for the country.
There are many more Sri Lankans domiciled in Victoria, prepared to help their country of birth to hit the top in the international sports scene, the affable medical practitioner concluded.

Battle of the Babes 2010 (SSCK vs VCK Big Match)

A close tussle is expected when St. Sylvester's College, Kandy, takes on Vidyartha College in the 52nd "Battle of the Babes" which will be played at the Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy, on March 19 and 20. Play commences at 9.45 a.m. on the first day and at 9.30 a.m. on the following day.
This battle came to be known as the "Battle of the Babes" as both schools were comparatively new to the schools cricket scene at that time and the big match took root in the mid fifties. But can you any longer call them babes as they are now 52 years old?
Of the 51 battles which had been fought out, the Sylvestians are in the lead with 13 wins against 3 by Vidyartha College. Last year, the Sylvestrians under Chanaka Colombage won through a default and the Match Referee awarded the match to the Sylvestrians.
The Sylvestrians needed 10 runs to win with 8 wickets in hand and with plenty of overs remaining. The two umpires stopped play around 5.10 p.m. due to bad light.
But twenty minutes later, when the light had further deteriorated came to the middle and wanted play to be resumed. But, Vidyartha College team did not come out, stating that it was unsafe to continue play.
Thus history was created when a big match was awarded first time to one of the teams. In any event there was no question about a Sylvestrian victory, as they were very close it.
The last win for Vidyartha College came in 1967 under the captaincy of R. M. Lafir. Lafir retired as DIG two years ago. Thus Vidyartha College have a 42-year-old 'jinx' to break.

St. Sylvester Gozzolini

Founder of the sylvestrines was born to the noble family of the Gozzolini at Osimo,Ascoli Piceno, Italy in 1177. Died on 26 November 1267. He was sent to study jurisprudence at Bologna and Padua but, feeling within himself a call to the ecclesiastical state, abandoned the study of law for that of theology and Holy Scripture, giving long hour daily to prayer. On his return home we are told that his father, angered at his change of purpose, refused to speak to him for ten years. Sylvester now accepted a canonry at Osimo and devoted himself to pastoral work with such zeal as to arouse the hostility of his bishop, whom he had respectfully rebuked for the scandals caused by the prelate’s irregular life. The saint was threatened with the loss of his canonry, but decided to leave the world on seeing the decaying corpse of one who had formerly been noted for great beauty. In 1227 he retired to a desert place about thirty miles from Osimo and lived there in the utmost poverty until he was recognized by owner of the land, a certain nobleman named Conrad, Who offered him a better site for his hermitage. From this spot he was driven by damp and next established himself at Grotta Fucile, where he eventually built a monastery of his order. In this place his penances were most severe, for he lived on raw herbs and water and slept on the bar e ground. Disciples flocked to him seeking his direction, and it became necessary to choose a rule According to the legend the various founders appeared to him in a vision, each begging him to adopt his rule. St. Sylvester chose for his followers that of St. Benadict and built his first monastery on Monte Fano, where, like another St. Benadict, he had first to destroy the remains of a pagan temple. In 1247 he obtained from Innocent IV, at Lyons, a bull confirming his order, and before his death founded a number of monasteries. An account of his miracles and of growth of his cultus will be found in Bolzonetti. His body was disinterred and placed in a shrine (1275-1285) and is still honoured in the church of Monte Fano. Clement IV first recognized the tile of blessed popularly bestowed on Sylvester, who was inscribed as a saint in the Roman Martyrology by order of Clement VIII (1598). Leo XIII extended his office and Mass to the Universal Church. His feast is kept on 26 November.

About Us

St. Sylvester’s began as a separate institution on 1 November 1940 with very Rev. Fr. D. Robert. Perera O.S.B. as the principal. The college owed its inception to the foresight of his lordship Bishop regna and Abbot Weerasinghe, the heads of the sylvestro-benedictine congregation. They felt that a good catholic school in Kandy town was a prime need, once St. Anthony’s had been completely shifted to its home on the banks of the Mahaweli at Katugastota. Rev father Robert was given the tremendous task of rearing the new that had just been born. St. Sylvester’s had made name for itself in the field of education, not only in Kandy but also throughout the length and breadth of the island. Starting with a mere 250 pupils and 12 teachers in 1940.
Father Robert was not expected to do big things at St. Sylvester’s. The buildings were not teeming with scholars, the laboratories were empty, and libraries were without books. Even the wherewithal to run the school was not available. It is said that he had to start with a over draft, but the picture of the institution now is a very different one. It is full to capacity, and its financial stability is assured. The authoritarian of the Sylvestro-Benedictines intended originally to develop St. Sylvester’s only as a junior school and affiliated to St. Anthony’s but such restrictions were not dampen the ardour of Father Robert. He early had visions of his institution as a collegiate school, second to one in the Island.
